Cool slideshow! What kind of huge creepy bug was that on the guy's shoulder? Is that what your class is studying this year?

I agree that wikis are wicked! And it's super-exciting to use them. There's immediate gratification - one minute, no wiki, the next minute - wiki! It's great that you are getting right into it.

How very cool that you have already gotten your kids contributing to a public wiki project! What numbers can you make with a hamster :-)

Kristi,

I'm glad you enjoyed some of those wikis on our platform (Wetpaint). I'm actually a big fan of the counting wiki too!

Using wikis to teach young kids math seems to work for those kids other methods cannot reach. Growing up in a home run by elementary school teachers has shown me some of the.... difficulties with teaching certain topics!

There are many great creative writing wikis out there. Feel free to email me and I can give you a list of some of the best.

Enjoy!

It is so easy to get overwhelmed with technology...I work in the technology office and find it hard to keep up with all that is out there. You have a great attitude about it - take those baby steps (and know you have plenty of support to hold your hand if you need it). Technology is definitely changing the way we can teach, but it should be making it easier, not harder. You have to find what works for you...

Kristi: One of the things that I hope to get out of our class is ideas for using web tools with our youngest students. Your idea of an audio record of stories, ideas and thoughts of young students is a good one. Let's brainstorm about how it could be managed so it is useful. I am also enjoying the time we spend together talking and learning. As much as we try to make time to touch base and collaborate it seems to happen best when we are working an a project.

Your very first sentence reminded me of how I felt in my first years of teaching. I was the only music teacher in the town. I taught at the elementary, junior high and the high school. The web would have been very helpful to me, too. I imagine the way colleges prepare teachers has changed immensely.
